It's not always easy, especially for Third Culture Kids (TCKs) and immigrants to adapt. For TCKs, it’s often hard to find a place they belong - some never do. They have to carve a new identity for the places in which they have to live. As for the places that should feel like home, they’re often told that they are not enough - that they have too many elements of another culture or way of being to truly belong.
As a TCK who has lived a significant part of my life in Toronto, I still sometimes struggle, and I know that this experience is not unique to me. We all have moments where we feel like we don’t belong and that we need to peel back layers - or add them, to fit it. And that’s okay! It makes us who we are.
This piece is for all of us who have struggled with our identity at one time or another. May we all find our tribe and our home.
